Here are two facts about Kenny Rushing that he’s not proud of: he was a millionaire by the time he was 18, and he sold poison in the form of illegal drugs in his beloved African American community.

Surrounded by corn fields and farmland in the small city of Des Moines, Iowa, Rushing, like many other young men in the in the late ’80s and early ’90s, didn’t see much of a future. His decision to be a drug dealer, however, eventually cost him seven years of his life in prison.

But for Rushing, now 33, prison – and discovering the book the Autobiography of Malcolm X – afforded him a chance to turn his life around. And after being released from prison in 2000, he used his street knowledge in a positive way to help himself and others.
